Negative calorie foods for weight loss

Negative calorie foods for weight loss
August 8, 2016Sarika NairUncategorized

Negative calorie foods?? Is that right??

Yeah you heard me.

Negative calorie foods are those foods which require more amount of energy to digest than the amount of energy they provide.

Mathematically putting (I love maths 🙂 )

Negative calorie foods = Energy provided < Energy used for digesting

About 10% of the energy from the meals is used in the process of digestion. Our body needs energy to breakdown these foods and absorb and store nutrients. Our body gets this energy from the food that we eat. There are certain foods that require lots of energy to break down and get absorbed. If these foods contain low calories,  the body derives energy to digest them from the stored fat.

However these foods are not zero calories. All foods have some calories. No food is actually “negative calorie” food. But the overall effect of certain foods in our body is that of “negative calories”. These foods are also high in fibre and keep us satiated for long. This reduces hunger pangs and thus overeating. When this happens, weight loss happens!

There is a controversy regarding these “”negative calorie foods””. Some believe that it is just a fad. But a research conducted by Dr.Bernard and his team has proven that generally all vegetables help us in boosting up the metabolism.

To summarise the benefits of negative calorie foods:

  1. Boosts your metabolism
  2. Curbs hunger pangs
  3. Improves digestion
  4. Keeps colon clean
  5. Lowers blood cholesterol levels
  6. Guilt free snacks

Following are a few negative calorie foods:

Vegetables

Broccoli, Carrot, Cucumber, Celery, Gourd, Spinach, Lettuce, Cauliflower

Fruits

Apple, Watermelon, Grapefruits, Oranges, Papaya, Apricots, Plums, Guava

There needs to be more research conducted on this topic. But if  these negative calorie foods help people consume fewer calories and eat healthier foods, then it can be a positive start to permanent weight loss!

Healthy munching to you all!!
